“Spring Forward with Strings”

March 6, 20108:00 pm

Washington County Historic Courthouse
Stillwater, MN

Georg Frederick Handel – Trio for Two Oboes & Continuo
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Symphony #29 in A Major
J. S. Bach – Brandenburg Concerto #6
Antonin Dvorak – Serenade in d minor

What were you doing when you were eighteen? Babysitting? Washing the car? The eighteen year old Mozart was living in Salzburg having just finished his 29th Symphony! When Handel was eighteen, the oboe was all the rage and the very gifted young composer couldn’t resist! Then we hear from the string section, as we present Bach’s beloved Brandenburg Concerto #6. Unusual in its omission of violins, this final Brandenburg radiates dark warmth and virtousity from what is usually the “middle” of the ensemble. The vibrant Serenade for Winds by Antonin Dvorak concludes our trip back in time with jaunty Slavic tunes and themes from Dvorak’s Czech homeland. Join us for an evening of music from four of history’s most well-loved composers.

“When Handel was in his teens the oboe was hugely popular–this is like today’s teenager playing electric guitar.” Rob McManus, oboe
